Prof. Dr. Fran, Zwitter was born on the 24th October 1905 in Bela Cerkev in Lower Carniola, died in Ljubljana on 14th April 1988. After his studies in Ljubljana and advanced scientific studies in Vienna and Paris he took a Grammar school professor job in Ljubljana. From 1938 to his retirement in 1975 he was Professor at the University in Ljubljana. During World VVar II he was confined, then joined the partisans and in 1944 became the director of the Scientific Institute at the presidency of SNOS (Slovene National — Liberation Gouncil). Zwitter researched into various problems: developement of population (Population on Slovene Territory from Middle of XVIII. Century to Nowadays), the question of borders, medieval towns, nationality question in the Habsburg monarchy. Fran Zwitter also introduced methods of the French school of history. He was from the first issue of the Historical Review member of its editorial office and from 1950 to his death he was commiteeman at Slovenska matica. He collaborated in preparing the History of Nations of Yugoslavia.

      • Prof. dr. Fran Zwitter se je rodil 24. 10. 1905 v Beli Cerkvi na Dolenjskem, umrl je 14. 4. 1988 v Ljubljani. Po študiju v Ljubljani in izpopolnjevanju na Dunaju in v Parizu, se je zaposlil v Ljubljani kot srednješolski profesor. Od leta 1938 do upokojitve leta 1975 je bil profesor na univerzi v Ljubljani. Med drugo svetovno vojno je bil najprej konfiniran, nato je odšel v partizane, kjer je postal leta 1944 vodja Znanstvenega inštituta pri predsedstvu SNOS. Zwitter se je ukvarjal z različnimi vprašanji, od razvoja prebivalstva (Prebivalstvo na Slovenskem od srede XVIII. stoletja do današnjih dni), vprašanja mej, o srednjeveških mestih, o nacionalnih vprašanjih v Habsburški monarhiji, in je pričel pri nas uvajati metode francoske zgodovinske šole. Zwitter je bil vse od začetka izhajanja Zgodovinskega časopisa član njegovega uredništva in od 1950 do smrti odbornik pri Slovenski matici. Sodeloval je med drugim tudi pri pripravi Zgodovine narodov Jugoslavije.
