The author attempts to present a survey of the economic and social development of these countries in the above-mentioned period. In addition to characteristics of this development, common of all Yugoslav countries exclusive of the Turkish power, he also presents specific traits of development in Slovene and Croatian (hinterland) countries, on the one side, and in the Venetian Istria, Dalmatia, and the Republic of Dubrovnik, on the other. The role of economic links of these countries vvith vvider area (the Balkans, the Danube region, and the Adriatic as well as Mediterranean area for Dubrovnik) and especially with Italy, is particularly stressed. Just as much it is also pointed out that the economic grovvth of the coastal countries depended in a large degree on links vvith their natural hinterland.
