By employing the so-called positive method of macro appraisal and selection of archives, public archival institutions in the Republic of Slovenia make sure to preserve records that have lasting importance for history, science and culture and for the legal certainty of the state and its legal and natural persons. Public archives are selected on the basis of written instructions of competent archival institutions and legally set appraisal criteria. Macro appraisal that has been practiced in Slovenia since the beginning of the 80s of the past century has thoroughly been defined in archival regulations and studied in archival professional literature and foreign, particularly German, archival theories and practices have had a strong influence on this process.
