Based on the archives kept by the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia, the author attempts to explain the reasons for the foundation and the eventual abolishment of the craft school in Kočevje.
Industry saw considerable progress in the second half of the 19th century. Industrial products made their way into the market, replacing traditional craft trade and contributing to its regression or even downfall. In less economically developed countries, there were many attempts to cushion the devastating effect of this new phenomenon by organizing quality craft schools. Despite their efforts, the fatal lagging behind of the craft trade was at times impossible to prevent.
Regardless of the strong interests of certain individuals, the school in Kočevje was one of many that did not fulfill the expectations of those concerned since it failed to be a match for the new economic challenges of the tirne.
