The author points out that the number of archivists who cover the fields of heraldry and sphragisites is rather low and that
professional staff has so far never really paid much attention to both areas of expertise. However, due to the increased public
need and interest (among the things included here are municipal coats of arms, keeping record of municipal coats of arms at
the Arthives of the Republic of Slovenia), it has become increasingly apparent that more of our attentlion will need to be
devoted to both of the subjects in question. The article provides an example of the newly founded community of Središče ob
Dravi and its coat of arms.
SrediIče ob Dravi was a market town community and had its own coat of arms. Although its features and colours are
known, the actual document on the coat of arms being awarded to the market town of Središče ob Dravi was never issued. In
1564, when the owners of Središče were the Szekely family, who also owned the Ormož Castle, the market town got its seal,
which depicted the image of the Središče ob Dravi arms and through time ecountered numerous interpretatians and
presentations in literature. The author also tackles a dilemma of how and to what extent the science is allowed and permilted
to affect the preservation of a historical coat of arms.
