The article presents a short survey of the development of the office of the Attorney
General from 1944, when an attorney general was appointed by the Decree of the
Presidency of the Slovene National Liberation Council, to 1977, when the last bill on
the responisbilities of the Attorney General was issued. A knowledge about the
activités and operations of attorney generals is very important for the valorisation and
professional research of their records, particularly, because the office of an attorney
general is undoubtedly a very influential authority of a country. Its office is one of the
most important makers of archival material. The documents of attorney generals are
therefore an essential source of information for an elucidation of an important period
in Slovene history.
