After the occupation in April 1941, the Germans founded an agency for archives,
libraries and museums at the Office of the Authorized State Commissioner for the
promotion of the German nation in Bled, which was headed by Dr Karl Starzacher.
Soon after his appointment to this post. Dr Starzacher offered a job involving the
protection of archives to Dr Josip Žontar. who accepted the job, although not without
hesitation. A central registry office was founded in Kranj, which collected parochial
registers and ensured the protection of church records, as well as other valuable
collections. It also saved many Slovene books in various libraries. In March 1942. the
archives were transformed into a branch office of the State Regional Archives in
Klagenfurt. After the end of the war. the branch office was closed down, and Dr
Žontar handed over the records to their rightful owners and the competent authorities.
For their work. Dr Žontar and his colleagues received many acknowledgments and
thanks from the State of Yugoslavia.
