In the period between the wars, three proposals for the Law on Archives and Their
Activities were put forward for the territory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. All three
were drafted by the National Archives of Belgrade in 1923, 1935 and 1939. But the
Law which was to regulate the issue of the validity and protection of archival records
of the institutions of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the tasks and authority of the
national and local archives in the country, was never adopted for various reasons. The
only official document on archives was the Law on Archives and Related Documents
of the Foreign Ministry and Diplomatic and Consular Offices of the Kingdom of
Yugoslavia. The Foreign Ministry also issued a statutory act and rules and regulations
governing the research conducted in the Main Archive of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and the unauthorised publication of diplomatic and consular documents.
