The article deals with thee concept of public and the
place of the archives in the society. The function of archives
is concerned with puhlic and privale interests, and the
guidelines for the professional decisions should be based on
the "public interest".
Modem societies are characterised by two completely
different concepts: on one side is the "idea of public
accessibility" and one the other is the protection of privacy
as Ihc legal righi. The example of the R.F.K. files - the
murder of senator Robert F. Kennedy in 1968 - shows the
problem of politically interesting archival material, for
which the public showed great interest for its accessibility.
On the other side, however, it was necessary to make this
archival records inaccessible for the sake of protection of
certain individuals in legal procedures. The example
represents numerous organisational problems the archival
institution had to face with when dealing with politically
problemalie records and grcal quantity of them. The
archives could make balance between the society and public
interest under the slogan "Archives of the people, by the
people, for the people".
