The footnotes in the collection of Simon Jenko's
works (published by DZS in 1965) mention that the main
character of his story JeprSki učitelj (The Teacher from
Jeprca) may have been one of the teachers of the
Smlednik Primary School, which Jenko also attended,
yet both the documents kept in the Historical Archives of
Ljubljana, as well as the school chronicles which
contains records dating back all the way to 1821, fail to
provide conclusive proof of this conjecture. Although it
is possible that the character of the teacher (that of a
gambler with a drinking problem) was inspired by one of
the author's contemporary, it is far more likely that the
entire story is, after all, merely a farce, the aim of which
was to portray the poor conditions prevailing in the
education system at the time.
