The following article is an excerpt from the introductory
and concluding chapters of research conducted
under the above heading. The article presents the aims,
method of work, the archival and library materials used
and guidelines for the conservation and restoration of
manuscripts. The study also includes a historical outline
of the development of book bindings, a detailed analysis
of the individual structural elements of medieval bindings
in Slovenia, a summarised presentation of the individual
structures, binding techniques and materials found
in the preserved medieval documents which are kept in
the Slovene public archives and libraries. Furthermore, it
also contains a glossary of the specific technical terms
connected with the binding seen as a book segment, as
well as a catalogue of all the bindings analysed to dale,
which includes a list of the findings of the study,
sketches, graphite prints and photographs.
