Hie significance and reputations of archival instituions
are based on keeping and transferring quality archival
materials. Thus, the appraisal of creators and the
quality selection of archival records form amongst
documentary records are very important pre-phases. The
article draws attention to the ambiguity and vagueness of
the current archival legislature with regard to the creators'
appraisal, which might cause a great deal of confusion
in Slovene archival practice. The organisational plan
(i.e. the system of document management in offices) for
shelving documentary and thus also archival materials
upon transfer from the reception office to the permanent
collection of documentary materials is of great importance
for the qualitative selection of archival records,
which, if possible, should be carried out by the creators
and, of course, according to the instructions of competent
archives. The organisational plan should also be a part of
the internal regulation book on handling creators' documentary
records. The deadlines for keeping parts of materials
are of the utmost importance in keeping documentary
records properly arranged. Unfortunately, a systematic
survey of numerous regulations pertaining directly
or indirectly to record-keeping deadlines is not
available in Slovenia. In order to illustrate the point, the
last part of the article consists of an incomplete survey of
the regulations in effect at the moment concerning the
deadlines of record-keeping. Keeping track of the legislation
passed in this field is also essential for the proper
maintenance of records.
