In the last four years, the Slovene public has quite
enthusiastically accepted the publication Slovenia on
Military Maps from 1763 to 1787 (Josephinische
Landesaufnahme 1763-1787 für das Gebiel Der Republik
Slowenien) published by the Scientific Research Centre
of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts and the
Archives of Ihe Republic of Slovenia. The publication is
transliterated and translated by the Archives' workers.
The head of Ihe project is Vincenc Rajšp, who also edits
the individual volumes containing the maps as well as
the commentaries. Undoubtedly, the maps are the better
part of this extraordinary project of Ihe period of Joseph
II, while ihe commentaries do not fulfil our expectations.
The value of the work lies primarily in the information it
provides on transport, rivers, castles, and buildings, but
fails to provide enough information on the trades which
were also important for Ihe army.
The image of Ihe Dolenjska region as presented by
the maps and text was rather bleak, as many forests were
in a very poor state of maintenance and impassable, the
only exception being the route Ljubljana - Nov Meets -
Karlovce and certain sections of Ihe road from Novo
Mesto to Zagreb.
