This presentation looks at the variety of records available at The National Archives, UK, which cover Prisoner of War (POW) camps in Europe, principally Stalag XVIII-D, and physical escapes from camps by Allied POWs. As the official archive of the UK Government, The National Archives holds a variety of records created or inherited by government departments on this subject, including Red Cross Inspection Reports, POW record cards, and intelligence records relating to escapes. Some of these provide rich accounts of the lives of POWs and their experiences during captivity, including the conditions in which prisoners were kept, the facilities to which they were afforded, and the work in which they carried out. While those relating to escapes from captivity often provide a fascinating insight into the daily social economy of POW camps, including how they operated, and provide details of the complexity and ingenuity used by those looking to escape.
