Opis

      • As concerns the relationship between Cistercian order and Slovenian culture, the opinion was often expressed that their influence and activity are comparable to the value Benedictines had for Anglo-Saxons and German lands. If the presence of Benedictines in the territory of present-day Slovenia is insignificant, the position of Cistercians is completely different. Stična abbey was certainly established before the first Cistercian monasteries in Scotland, Portugal, Hungary, Poland, and Scandinavia. Special closeness to the order’s country of origin in northern France was not expressed only by the first abbot Vincent, but also monastic architect Michael. Successful integration of the new monastery into European cultural trends of the 12th century is finally illustrated by the activity of scriptorium in Stična. The second Cistercian monastery in Carniola, Kostanjevica, was established from Viktring abbey in 1234. Due to its border position within the territory of its founder duke Bernard Spanheim the fate of the abbey was fundamentally different to the one that befell Stična, despite their geographical closeness. In other respects, monasteries shared numerous characteristics of their evolution. The boom period lasted in both cases until the mid-14th century which brought a pan-European crisis. The 15th century was characterized by Turkish peril that greatly affected the monasteries and led to a repeated change of priorities. On the other hand, Lower Carniolan Cistercian monasteries found themselves at the heart of Reformation in Slovenian lands. At the end of the 16th century, Catholic renewal started, as might be inferred from the functioning of important abbots Lovrenc Zupan in Stična and previously mentioned Jurij from Freyeisen in Rein. Overall, 17th and 18th centuries were an era of renewal of Slovenian Cistercian monasteries. However, even outside of the monasteries’ walls, the new period started to rise almost simultaneously, the Age of Enlightenment. Even if monastery church Kostanjevica was abandoned after decrees implemented by Joseph II, Stična abbey was given another opportunity. Slovenian territory played a very important role in the history of the Carthusian order. In Lower Styria Carthusian monasteries arose, the first ones outside of French-Italian area from where the order originated. Žiče, founded in 1160 and Jurklošter, founded soon after 1170 »overtook« the arrival of Carthusians in the land of the Crown of Saint Stephen by a century. The fate of Slovenian charterhouses confirms that their preservation is on average a far more demanding task than the preservation of Cistercian monasteries. Bistra is the only monastery in Slovenian territory to survive the tsunami in the form of Joseph II without any interruption. Anti-contemplative hysteria in numerous European countries that reached France for the second time in the beginning of the 20th century greatly contributed to the renewal of Carthusian life in Pleterje.
