On the Frontier of the Empire

Lands under the Austrian rule experienced important legislative, cultural and social changes in the period between mid-eighteenth and the beginning of nineteenth century. Emperor Joseph II conducted reforms on a large scale intent on changing the social system.

In 1718 Zemun became part of Hapsburg Empire; in 1749 it was separated from Military Frontier and organized as a special administration unit – Magistrat. In 1918 it became part of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and since 1934 part of city of Belgrade. In 18th and 19th centuries Zemun was considered an important trading post between Vienna and Constantinople and developed into a lively trading town.

Numerous records on Slovene towns and their inhabitants are preserved in the Historical Archives of Belgrade’s oldest fonds – Magistrat Zemun. One of the records dates back to the 18th century and relates to aid given to inhabitants of Celje (Slovenia).
