      • The Angevin house of Naples was constantly involved in the affairs in the Italian Peninsula, Sicily and France. Indeed the Neapolitan Angevins found their toughest antagonist in Sicily, which was at the time under Aragonese rule. However, this was not their only rival. Charles Il. was involved for instance in a struggle against the Savoyard dinasty, which temporarily brought Piedmont in his possession. There were sporadic clashes between the Angevins and the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire and with the Ghibelline cities of Northern Italy. International circumstances which occupied the Angevins were thus unfavourable to the principality of Achaea which urgently needed rulers who would be much more active on its soil.
