The Gottscher Germans (Kočevarji) lived as a linguistic isle in the south-eastern part of the present Slovenia for more than six hundred years, that is until their migration (1941/42) and after that their withdrawal and expulsion from Yugoslavia after the year 1945. Since the 15thcentury, they were known as peddlers; they also includcd themselves in the mass emigration wave to the United States of America after the year 1880. On the basis of censuses and published and archival records of emigrants from the years 1892-1913, an analysis was made on emigration from the district of Kočevje; for the years 1892 and 1893, sample registers of emigrants from the communities Draga (Suchen) and Koprivnik (Nessenthal) are being published.
